The hail began hitting the car as I pulled into the church parking lot. As I was looking for a spot, the sound had me thinking it was just very large rain drops falling. Then the landscape turned white and the little balls of ice started accumulating on the windshield wipers and sides of the windows. Harder and harder it fell.
I sat in the car for a minute or so thinking it would stop. But no. I took a deep breath, opened my door, put up the umbrella and got out. The wind was whipping around like crazy. I got my bag, scriptures, and little gifts for TC ward Primary Presidency out and tucked the umbrella handle under my armpit. I was trying to balance everything including my keys and phone--which for some reason conventional wisdom escaped me and I was carrying them in my hands when I should have put them in my briefcase.
I took one step and realized that the parking lot was like a pond of ice. My high heeled feet were slipping everywhere. The only way to navigate into the building was by shuffling along a few inches at a time.
I must have looked really funny (even though I wasn't the only one walking this way), because Cindy Suman the stake RS president commented about it when she sat down by us. She was parking near me and had to wait for me to get across the pavement.
The building was wet. This is California. We don't have entry areas for coats, umbrellas and boots, etc. Nor do we use the furnace system very much. All of a sudden during sacrament meeting I felt the a/c kick on and blowing on me. I just had to chuckle.
