Lahaina--We Are Here!

We left early this morning, and Mike drove us and Patti and Richard to LAX. We got all settled and then had some breakfast at Chili's in the airport. The french toast was awesome. We've had this trip planned with them since last year and now it is finally here!

The flight was uneventful and smooth. But the plane was crowded and there wasn't a lot of leg room or elbow room for that long of a flight. Dad wants to upgrade on the way home. It is breathtakingly beautiful here. So different than Honolulu. Not that anything is wrong with that. But this is geographically different and so laid back in terms of 'energy'. RELAXING, would be the perfect word.
Our condo is like an apartment. Little kitchen and all. Our view from one side is the water, and the other is a mountain. Richard and Patti have been coming here for almot 30 years. Now we are seeing why they love it so much. Gorgeous! GREEN! The palm trees are swaying in the breezes.

We had dinner at a little place called Leilani's right at sunset. There was a band playing Eagles songs and it was fun to hear Hotel California while we ate al fresco. I had swordfish that was swimming this morning. Oh, was it delicious. And then of course we had their famous Hula Pie. Now I know what Meredith is talking about! Chocolate cookie crust, ice cream with hints of coconut, hot fudge, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and then roasted macadamia nuts on top. Yum. The restaurant is in a little place in the city called Whaler's Village. It's a pleasant walk from the resort. Good that we walked there and back so we could wear off some of that Hula Pie!
Good night everyone. With the time difference we are feeling like it is much later. I'm sure we'll adjust as the week goes on.

Broken

Isn't this wonderful! The message is so powerful. Enjoy!

Prayers Needed

This is not meant to be a downer/bummer. But the power of prayer is REAL, and is needed!

I just learned that Casey Vongasawad is in the end stages of battling cervical cancer that has now gone to her brain. If you have a facebook, you can get the details from Tyler's page. It is very serious and they are looking at a very short time for her, a matter of days at this point. I knew Casey when she was married to her first husband and remember her joy of learning she was pregnant and then Ty dying right after. She gave birth and raised Tyler herself with the support of family and friends. She finally found love again 20some years later and now after a short time with Mike, she is dying. I loved meeting up with her again when we moved here! She touched anyone she came in contact with. Please pray for her and her family.

Cousin, Heather Luedtke, is struggling with her battle with breast cancer too. It is now spreading. They are going to try some new treatments, but they are finding it in other key places in her body. She is so young and has those two darling babies. Prayers are needed here too.
Uncle Mike Davis lost his job with Avis this week. He was the manager at the SLC airport for goodness sake! But they are cutting out the higher paying positions. They just bought that home, will have to buy a car now (they always used the cars from Avis...). Aunt Jan is trying to pick up some more hours at the hospital.

Aaron has lot his job.

Our Mike is still unemployed.

Dad is working on some prospects with John H. and Mike K. Pray hard!

Prayer is the soul's sincere desire. Pray as if everything depended on the Lord, and then get up and do as if everything depended on you. (good quotes)

The One Where We Got A Lot Done

The windies came up again during the night. It is dry and warmer. I can tell because I have to use a lot more lotion and my lips are chapped. Allergies are kicking up.

Duff and I ran errands today. He was not too crazy about all the things that had to be taken care of. He said, "Is this what you do when you run errands?!" He couldn't believe all the 'little' ones that need to get done. He wanted to know if we could just do them later. I told him, once we're out, we're out, and you just make a plan and get them done. It was nice when we were finished. We stopped in at Costco to purchase a suitcase and our lunch date ended up being all the samples! By the time we were done, there was no reason to go to a restaurant!

We got 2 more 55 gallon drum water barrels for our emergency preparedness. Our ward ordered them and we got a screamin' deal. Now we need to rotate the others and refill them all.

I have been enjoying January. It feels good. I've been cleaning out and there has been time to do it. I haven't been able to get to some of these things for ages. I've been formulating a plan in my mind for the holidays at the end of the year. There are some things I want to start doing next month and tuck them away to reduce the stress later on. Wish me luck!

I found out today that a good friend of mine has some very serious health problems she is facing. You just never know. I was speechless.

Caught You Being Good...

Christine made a New Years Resolution all on her own to consistently say her nightly prayers and to read the entire Book of Mormon! I stopped in her room a few nights ago and there she was reading. She has not missed one day so far since January 1.

Way to go Chris! Love You!

(Spent a good portion of the day on the phone. Cleaned out the family room ottoman that has all the games in it. It was good to go through them and make sure all the pieces go to the right games. Threw some incomplete and old ones out.)

Tuesdays To-Do's

Today I was up early, showered and off to take Ruth to meet a new attorney for child custody. She is a darling young gal who was recently baptized and has an new baby. Got there at 8am only to find she had to cancel due to a conflict. She tried to call, but my phone was left on silent since church on Sunday. I sometimes forget to fix that.

Back home with the whole day now. I got a lot done. Especially when it comes to the garage. We went for so long without having a garage to park in that now that we have 2 of them, it makes me nuts when they are cluttered. Mike came by and helped me get all the totes back up on the shelves. Then I proceeded to clean out the decoration cupboards and reorganize them. It didn't take too long and it sure looks and feels good. I've decided that as each holiday comes around this year I'm going to do some serious purging of old stuff that I don't know why I've kept it! A good sweep and straighten and wah-lah!

I stopped over at Patti's for about an hour to return some borrowed books, a gift for Megan, and some sewing supplies Meredith borrowed from her mom. Also to go over some details of our trip together this coming week! She has come up with a 'project' for us to do while we are happily doing 'nothing' but relaxing. I needed to pick out some supplies. More on this later, but typical Patti, it is totally related to where we will be! She is so good at this. She was even like this when we were kids! I'm excited. (Hint: there is a clue in this post. Can you guess?)

The bus came about 10 minutes early today, so when Christine called I was still in Coto which would now make me late for car pool pickup. Oh, well. This is southern California, right? Everything is still gorgeous green. But today on the shady pickup corner it dared to be 59* and the kids were complaining how cold they were! Yes, we are wimps!

Homework, dinner, some quilt washing, and carpool to mutual for road show practice. We trade and share buildings with the other wards during this time so everyone gets a chance to use the stake center where the performances will be. Tonight it was off to another building for us. The 'girly' chatter and music choices were so fun. I remember those years of my own. So cool and so awkward. So full of learning and growing.

Can You Guess?

This morning I've been doing laundry and deep cleaning the laundry room. We had way too many random keys hanging on the hooks so dad and I set about to go through them all. We ended up throwing away about half of them. Can you believe that? Look what we came across in the process!
What is this from and what is your favorite memory there?

Anniversary

Today is the day my Auntie Dolene got married. She treated us kids like we were her own, especially when we were little. I don't know why I always remember this day. But I do. I was almost 12. I remember the trip to St.George. Caravaning with Auntie Tia and Uncle Bob. We had Mamo and Daddo with us in our car. Staying in the Travelodge Motel on St. George Blvd. in a room on the ground floor right next to the pool. We just looked at it in January! We had adjoining rooms with Mamo and Daddo.

It was a beautiful sunny day in January. A luncheon at one of Uncle Joe's relatives, the Ipsons. We kids were antsy. Then a trip to Glenwood and Richfield for a reception there. Cute little old fashioned motel. I remember all the brown wood in the rooms. BIG snow storm! Cold. I hadn't been in a snow storm before. I remember being afraid of driving on the road out of Richfield. It was snowing so hard. The adults in the car were commenting on it and I was scared. But my daddy was a great driver and we got to the highway safely for the drive home.

Auntie Dolene is gone now, but if she were here she would do something to make this day special. So here's to she and Uncle Joe!

Why Did The Cake Fall?

I love this new church schedule. Duff was up and gone for early meetings. Christine slept in--love that teenage life. I cuddled with Darla and watched the Tab choir broadcast.
We celebrated Adrianne's bday today, so I put an angel food cake in the oven in the quiet kitchen. I took it out and was getting the chicken ready to put in, and I turned around and it totally fell 'out' of the pan! WHAT? How many years have I been making angel food cakes? The only thing I can think of is that it was still kind of rainy outside and I must not have baked it long enough to get all the extra moisture out. Luckily, I had another mix in the pantry and started another one. I made sure I baked it the maximum time and it turned out beautifully. Go figure. So I'm going to break up the fallen one and mix it with some pudding for FHE dessert tomorrow. I guess I can be grateful for a 'two-fer'!

I enjoyed our church meetings today. The messages were timely in Sacrament meeting. The law of the fast. It gave me a lot to think about. I can improve. Personal worthiness. We can all improve here too. RS was a nice lesson on using the savior's example of leadership in our own lives. We are all leaders: women, mothers, wives, any calling. I visited with good friends. It is always nice to connect with my sisters in the gospel.

Mike and Adrianne were here when Chris and I got home and we got dinner finished and enjoyed roast chicken. Adrianne's choice for her bday dinner. Duff and Christine left for the fireside and I got the kitchen cleaned up and then Mike, Adrianne, and I played Nertz until they got home. The cake and ice cream ended the birthday week on the right note.

I got to talk to all the kids today at some point. That made the day complete.

P.S. New blog for the upcoming Road Show. Scroll down and click on it under Friends and Family Bloggers. WAY cute picture of Christine with Addy. When did she grow up, please someone tell me how that works!

Change is blowing in the wind....more to come later....

Saturday

Slept in. Raining. Breakfast. Did some laundry stragglers. Got the rest of the Christmas decorations packed and in the garage. Why does it always look so sparse when they are down? Grocery shopping. More rain. Relaxed. Duff worked on his fireside talk he gives tomorrow. Road show practice.

A New Woman

I feel much better today. But last night was not good. I slept really well, and even though I'm sore, it's not throbbing and my whole head doesn't hurt.

I've been ornery today. I don't know why. Maybe it's a combination of things: busy trip, dentist appointment, some Christmas decorations still not put away, rainy, RS board meeting tonight with a VT department that I was to do, etc. Duff ran to the bank and I decided to take advantage of the quiet house to myself to pray. It helped quite a bit, but I still couldn't shake the whole thing. (Oh, I guess I should mention that they asked Miss Closet Pianist to play for the meeting since the pianist couldn't come. Talk about stress. I'm always happy to do what is needed even if I'm not the best at it, and it did turn out all right after a whole afternoon of practicing!)

I felt obligated and responsible to be there to support the presidency and the board. I've been on their end and I know how much work goes into preparing these meetings. But really, all I wanted to do was stay home and be cozy. I found myself upstairs freshening up and the teeny tiny thought came into my mind: You know why you're so ornery? Because something really good is going to happen at the meeting tonight and 'you-know-who' doesn't want you to be a part of it. He's tried all day to wear you out so that you will just give up and come up with an excuse not to go.

Hmmmmm. Yeah. When I get that thought it's usually right on. So I grabbed my things and left.

Of course! One of the most fantastic meetings ever! From the opening hymn to the closing prayer. The spirit was strong, piercing. The spiritual thought and talks were very candid, doctrinal, practical. I came home a new woman!

Crown

Well, I made it through my dental appointment, but I am feeling it.

I arrived at 8am all medicated and ready to go. No wonder my tooth had been hurting! The old silver filling was cracked, and once he got beneath it, there was a lot of decay that couldn't be seen on the xray. Then after he got that all taken care of, the tooth was cracked in 3 different places. My, my, my, aye, aye, aye.

Then the hygenist came in and while I was all numbed up she cleaned where she didn't last month because it was hurting from the crack. Then they cemented the temporary in. Before they let me go, they all let me know that they had done a lot of work on my mouth and I was not going to feel very good the rest of the day--and they were right! I can hardly get my mouth open and even my eyeballs ache!

Thank goodness for Ibuprofen! I'm sure I'll be better tomorrow. But for now, it's jammie time, Advil time, and cuddle up on the couch!

Happy Birthday to ADRIANNE!

Happy Birthday To You--
May God Bless You.
Happy Birthday Dear Adrianne,
Happy Birthday To YOU!

What a special day! Today is Adrianne's 30th birthday! Happy Birthday, sweetie. You are wonderful and amazing. We love having you in the family. It feels like you've always been a part of us. It's nice to watch you and Mike build your life together.

We Have A New President

Today was the presidential inauguration of our new president, Barack Obama. I hope he will do a good job. His views on things are very different than mine. I have concerns for our future. But, I am grateful for the blessing of living in a country where we can vote and have the freedoms we do, so I will pray for him and support him the best that I can. Christine had an interesting question. She wants to know what all the hype is about him being a 'black' man, when his mother was white, he was raised in a white lifestyle/community, etc. The Obama family is darling. The daughters are cute and fresh, and it will be fun to see them in the white house. Duff and I watched the Inauguration on tv this morning. It is quite the ceremony!

Catch Up Soon!

I got home from AZ last night. What a whirlwind trip! Lots of fun and lots of love. Lots of laughing too. Sometimes we laughed so hard our sides were sore. I have my BIG dentist appointment in the morning for a crown--eeeeeee--so maybe after the meds wear off I can post some pictures and journal. It's always good to visit, but always nice to come home.

Chickens

Grandma and Grandpa have been really working steadily on their emergency preparedness/food storage. They are on a fixed income, so they do a little bit here and there and it is amazing how quickly it adds up. Side note: Meredith showed me how she and Josh have set aside a small cupboard in their oh so teeny one bedroom/one bath apartment and they are using the guide I post on the blog each month to begin to build their storage. It does add up faster than you think! Good job guys! Anyway--back to Grandma and Grandpa. They have some friends in their ward, James and Maribeth, who live in a small area that is zoned for chickens. So Grandpa bartered with James--Grandpa would provide materials and build the coop and help him maintain the area, and James and Maribeth feed the chickens most of the time and let them use a nice corner of the property. Above is Grandpa and one of his prized chickens.

They bought 18 to begin with and after 10 weeks they have 14 who have made it and are thriving. From what they tell me that is normal.

They have 6 different kinds:

  1. 3--California Whites(lays white eggs)
  2. 3--Rhode Island Reds (lays brown eggs)
  3. 3--Araconnas (sp?) (lays green eggs)
  4. 3--Black Sexlinks (lays brown eggs)
  5. 1--Bard Rock (lays brown eggs)
  6. 1--Buff Orrington (lays brown eggs)

We saved all the parsley and left over greens from Chompies and took it to them. They will eat a handful of 'scratch' right out of your palm. They are so soft to hold and calm if you are calm. Grandma holding a brown egg from one of James's chickens.
Lisa holding one of them. Their 'hatch-day', aka: birthday, is November 10th, 2008, so they are right around 10 weeks old. Grandpa calls them his 'teenagers'! I named one Chatterbox, because she just peeped and peeped, one Goldilocks, and one Duchess. It's okay, isn't it? They are only for laying eggs. We aren't going to eat these, right? I read Marley and Me. It meets the criteria, right? Ten more weeks to go and they will be mature and start laying eggs. How great is that! At least a dozen fresh eggs a day. Hey, I want 'in'! I have friends in the canyon, hmmm..... I wonder....

Back to mom and dad's to watch a movie with the 'girls' and then around the corner to Lisa's for leftovers and off to the airport for home. USAir got me here safe and sound. Phew!
Duff and Christine picked me up with our 'baby' Darla. They tell me she moped all around the house for 5 days while I was gone, keeping watch at the top of the stairs for any and every car that went past hoping I was in one of them. She saw me come up to the car at the airport curb
and went crazy wiggling and crying until I could pick her up. Crazy pooch! Gotta love her sweetness and loyalty.

Chompies

Chompies is a 'must do' when you go to the Phoenix area. It's where 'the locals eat', so you know it's good! It was one of the things that Mike really wanted to do on their vacation.
So we headed on over for brunch on Monday. I drove with mom and dad in the backseat and promptly got car sick. So while we were waiting to get in, I walked and walked around the parking lot. I've always had trouble with motion sickness. Half of my kids get it too. Sorry! Dramamine is a good friend of mine.
Mike and Josh. This deli is amazing. You can get every combo of every thing you can conceive. I haven't had one bad thing here ever. I am partial to the French Dip and the Hot Pastrami, though. And Lisa likes the Brisket. But their breakfasts are pretty darn impressive too.
Josh and Meredith. Chompies is like being in New York or downtown LA. She got breakfast and he got lunch. He got French Dip and Mike got Hot pastrami and they shared 1/2 of each.
Mike and Adrianne. He had reached his picture limit! She got breakfast and he got lunch!
Auntie and Grandma.
Grandpa and Uncle Craig. Grandpa put the paper napkin ring on his nose. Oh, silly him. The 'Ward' sense of humor is a good one.
I had to get a picture of this jam caddy. This brought back a rushing memory of my Mamo Minnie. Whenever they would travel, she would fill her purse with all the Smucker's jam packets and bring them home for us kids! I can see the inside of her purse perfectly with all the jam packet colors against the black fabric.
...and what would a good old deli sandwich be without a true kosher dill pickle! We went through 4 trays of these! Ummmm, divine! It's the German coming out in us.....

Par-tay Weekend--

Auntie decided that since Mike and Adrianne were in town we should celebrate Adrianne's birthday too! So Sunday after church we gathered at the Tucker's. Adrianne picked lasagne, salad, and garlic bread. She chose the classic yellow cake with 'homemade' chocolate frosting. (Mike just can't abide the frosting from a can and he never misses an opportunity to let me know...) The dinner was yummy (of course), and the cake spectacular. Gramma was in charge of the cake, and Grandpa insisted that he had to help frost it. They made sure there were 30 candles on it! Adrianne has the cutest smile.

She got them all out in one breath too! just like Grandma. Oh, and the ice cream du jour was mint chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough.
We played games again, and it was a great time together as a family. Adrianne is having a lot of celebrations for the big 3-0 this year. She deserves it!

Mutti's Party

I truly did not take one picture tonight! I was too busy having too much fun!

Lisa planned a fabulous party for Mom. We had a traditional family taco dinner with all the trimmings and Davis taco punch.

Guests included:
  • Kristin and Clint
  • Me
  • Mike and Adrianne (who drove in yesterday and surprised Gramma by knocking on her door and when she answered Mike said, "I hear there is a party tomorrow!" Gramma freaked out for the 2nd day in a row because of family surprising her)
  • Gwen, Bob, Keifer
  • Noel and Beverly
  • Craig and Lisa
  • Arlene and Denise
  • Mom and Dad

OH! We had the best time. We LAUGHED and VISITED, sang, played games, watched ball games, ATE (of course!), opened presents. It was a wonderful get-together.

Look What A Little TLC Can Do!

A year or so ago, Kristin and Clint were getting a new patio set and gave their old one to Josh and Meredith. Josh and Mere have a small, but nice little patio off their living room. It was in great condition, but needed a little TLC. Originally it was white mesh, but Meredith chose a really nice espresso brown to paint it. Lisa and I washed and primed it, and then Meredith, Josh and I painted it. We did the table and umbrella stand on the patio. See the original white and now the rust colored primer. My forearm was very sore the next day!
The umbrella stand pre-paint. We were originally going to use a textured brown paint, but it didn't look like the paint can lid AT ALL, so we took all the rest of it back and decided to go with a satin brown. Much better choice!

Wow, can you believe the difference!?

We spread the chairs out among the rock planters just on the other side of their patio. Then we 'raked' the rocks when we were all done so the painted ones blended in.
Meredith doing the paint coat.
Didn't they turn out nice? They will be able to use this for a long time now.

We ran out of paint for the table, but Meredith is going to get an extra can and will finish it up on Monday morning. I'm going to be at my parents house now for the rest of my trip.
It was a fun project, and look what a little spray paint can do!

What A Modern Day Miracle Looks Like, by Glenn Beck

This is the transcript from Glenn Beck's radio show about the US Airways jet that crashed into the Hudson river in New York yesterday. Roberta put the link on her blog and I loved/appreciated his words so much I want to post them here so that when I print this out at the end of the month it can go in my journal. Thanks Berta, for all your effort to find it! It may look long, but I promise you will not be disappointed.

January 16, 2009 - 13:05 ET

GLENN: Let me ask you this: What is a miracle? Is God a respecter of men? Does God answer prayers? Does God change the rules of the universe? What is a miracle?

Yesterday I came up to my office and I had been walking between our offices and by the time I had left one office and got into the next one and I come up, the people up on my floor said, "Glenn, there's been a plane crash." And I said, "Where?" And they said, "You can see it in the corner office in the back of the building." I can't tell you, I can't tell you what it's like to work in New York City. A week ago -- my office overlooks the Empire State building. I'm a few blocks away from the Empire State building and I can see it in one of our floor-to-ceiling windows. I can see the full impair state building, from the base to the top. That window -- my desk looks right at it, and last week somebody threw themselves out of a 70-story window, out of the Empire State building. So now every time I look up from my desk, I see that and for the last week or so I've been just thinking about that poor soul that was so desperate that threw himself out of the window. The other way you look at my desk, the other floor-to-ceiling window is looking at the Chrysler building, but two of the New York airports are on the other side of the island right behind -- the perspective is right behind the Chrysler building. So I'm looking at this sea of sky scrapers and I keep seeing these planes dodge between the buildings or what looks like are dodging between the buildings. They're quite a distance away. So every time I think of it, I think of the World Trade Center. In our studios we look right into Times Square and quite honestly every time I look at Times Square, I think of who are we because of all of the consumerism and everything else, what is happening. And the one bright spot is on the other corner of the studio that looks right out over the river, right over the Intrepid. It has been the only corner for me on this -- because we have a floor, and it's the only corner for me that has remained a real corner of hope because I see that aircraft carrier out there and I see -- I think of the great history of our military and our country and everything else. And they said, "You can see it in the back." And I said, where? They said, "You can see it right next to the Intrepid." And immediately I thought, "Oh, no." First of all I thought, was it terror, what happened, et cetera, et cetera. And it just, I just, I had just no more left in me. I think I might have said, "This city just never gives up." And I walk to the window and we see the -- we can see the plane, we can see the rescue happening. In fact, the picture that you see on the Drudge Report that's been there was sent from our office, and I tell you, I have to ask you what is a miracle, what is a miracle. I know what a mistake is.

That was -- what is a miracle.

I think what we witnessed yesterday was a miracle. I don't know if you have looked and put all of the string of coincidence together. I mean, here's a group of people that get together, they hear a large bang. Put yourself in this seat. You hear a large bang, you look out the window, you see the engine flame out, and what goes through your mind right then? Have you ever been on a plane where you think -- where you just hit bad turbulence? I've been white knuckle, just holy cow, we're not going to make it. What are you thinking when the pilot gets on the speaker and says, "Brace for a rough landing"? What are you thinking when they say, "Underneath your seat is a flotation device." What are you thinking? Are you looking out the window? Are you looking out and seeing that eye level you are right -- you are looking possibly at people like me looking right at you out the window. Do you see the Hudson River getting bigger and bigger, the ice that's in it and you know possibly "I can't swim." If we do get out, how long can I last in that water? What is the pilot thinking as he's heading towards the George Washington bridge, the exact same route that was taken by the 9/11 hijackers? You don't fly over the George Washington bridge. You don't fly over the Hudson.

This is the route -- the last time a 727 took this route, they ended in the World Trade Center. What were the people on the bridge thinking as they saw this plane slowly lumber 900 feet over the George Washington bridge? Probably the same thing I was thinking when I arrived in my office. What was the pilot thinking, knowing that his engines weren't working, wondering can I get my plane over the bridge? What was he thinking when he could see in the sky the Hudson or Teterboro, which is an airport in New Jersey? They were equal distance from each other. Did he choose, "I'm going to land this in the water because if I land it in the water and we crash or if I can't make it, it only kills us. If I try to make it to Teterboro and something happens, I crash into a mass of humanity. Was that what he was thinking? What was he thinking when he passed the bridge and he got over it and he looked down the Hudson and there weren't any boats on the Hudson? If you're anywhere near New York or if you're a pilot and you see the Hudson, you fly over it and you see it, there are always tugboats, there are always barges, it's always full of boats. Was he wondering before he could see the Hudson how many people will I kill on boats? What was everybody thinking when they hit the water, at a speed, it was like hitting dry ground? As you feel the jolt shoot through your body from your feet to your head? What were you thinking as your body pulls up against that seat belt and yet your body is flexible enough that you hit your head on the luggage compartment? What goes through your mind when you believe you're going to die? I can tell you I don't think that you were thinking about your political party. You weren't thinking whether you were from a red state or a blue state. "Oh, gee, if I just would have finished that project at work." "Oh, gosh. Well, thank goodness it's over because I've lost my job." I doubt you were thinking, "Oh, jeez, well, this will be blessed relief because I've got so many other problems and the world seems to be melting down." I dare say even Al Gore wouldn't have been thinking, "Oh, jeez, but who's going to fight global warming." You are not thinking about Barack Obama's inauguration.

Yesterday God sent us a reminder, a reminder of what's truly important. On the same path as the planes of 9/11, he reminded us yet again: It's about family. And that's really pretty much it. He reminded us that miracles happen. He reminded us that when everything is stacked against us, we can make it. Even coming at a dirty and grungy and mob body-filled water, you can survive.

Both engines blown out, hydraulic system on the plane impacted. The pilot makes that thing a lumbering giant, and he had no hydraulics and he's trying to hold on, he and the copilot. They missed the George Washington bridge by 900 feet. A plane falling from the sky, and everybody represented, from the 9-month-old baby to the 85-year-old grandma.

What was the string of coincidence, what was the string of coincidence? There were no boats or tugs. Why? Because it was cold. Just a few blocks up from the George Washington bridge, the river had just been closed. So there weren't any boats per se. That waterway is always full of tugboats and cargo ships. There was nothing, except ferries. You could land that plane anywhere. That plane came to a stop right by the Intrepid, which happens to be right by the ferry docks. There happened to be a ferry right there just about where the plane came to a dead stop. The ferry, all they had to do was just release the lifeboats and push them over.

It's been 45 years since a plane landed on the water and everyone survived. 45 years. I don't even listen to "Your seat can be used as a flotation device." Just slam into the water because you are all going to flip and die. I'll never say that again.

By the way, something else that was highly unusual. This pilot is not only somebody who teaches safety, who teaches emergency landing, not only has air hours like crazy, not only is a fighter pilot but he is one of the rare few commercial air pilots that not only have combat experience but also has his glider's license. I doubt he ever thought he would be gliding an Airbus, but he did.
Even though the water was choppy and white capped and 40 degrees and 18 degrees outside, somehow or another he landed it perfectly what are the odds that that happened? What are the odds that they hit a flock of geese, in fact not one but two, so big that it actually showed up on radar.

God is not a respecter of men. He loves all of us, no matter what we do, equally. We just have to be prepared. He asks us, be prepared. He asks us, pay attention. He asks us to do the right things. He asks us to think of others. Was the pilot prepared? Did the pilot do the right thing for others? Why didn't he try to land at Teterboro? Why did he try a risky water landing in comparison?

You could choose to look at this as just a, "Wow, what a lucky break these guys had, huh?" Or you could experience the miracle of seeing a wake-up call, of seeing a message being sent. It landed right on 56th street. 57th's where all the media is located. All of the media is located on 57th, West 57th. The plane stopped on West 56th. So there was plenty of media there to capture it.

By the way, the plane also stopped where the media was. Today they've had to drive all the way down to Battery Park to see it because it has drifted from here to the old World Trade Center site, just about a block away from Wall Street.

Sure, an engine can take one bird, an engine can take two birds, but an engine can't take a flock, and an engine certainly can't take two flocks. It's very rare to experience something like this. It was almost, for a plane, the perfect storm. And there were the odds, but the people were prepared, they did the right thing, and they brought it down. And everybody got off the plane safely.

God didn't change the world. God didn't change physics. He didn't freeze the water to stop the boats. He didn't lift it up with his hand and defy physics. Miracles aren't like that. That's why people don't believe in them anymore. Miracles really are a change in perspective. My perspective on this plane crash is that, look at how many things went right. My perspective was, thank goodness we had somebody who in a state of emergency didn't panic, didn't do anything but his job.

By the way, Sully, as he's known, the pilot, he was spotted at the airport last night a few hours after the crash. He was dry, he was back in captain's clothes cleanly pressed. He had his captain's hat on. He sat alone in a coffee shop. The people who saw him said, aren't you... he said yes. He went back to minding his own business. They said that he looked like he was just finishing up another ordinary day.

Jet Crash In The Hudson

Yesterday, I was home with Josh at their apartment. Meredith was at work. I was doing the 'mom' thing there. You know--moms come to visit and nuture. It helps us relax, right? I was in the kitchen getting a drink of water, doing some laundry, waiting for Lisa to get there so we could clean and prime the patio set, and Josh's cell phone rang. It was Mike telling him about the crash in the Hudson. He ran to the tv and turned it on and we stood there, shocked, as we watched it unfold.

I cannot even begin to tell you the pit in my stomach I felt when it first happened. I had just flown USAir yesterday. It is not the airline I usually fly and there were some not so subtle differences. Not good or bad either way, but just different than what I was accustomed to. I was sitting in the back of the plane and it felt and sounded like an old bucket of bolts. In fact, that very thought crossed my mind as we took off. I made a conscious effort to take note of my surroundings and where the closest exit was--'just in case.' As we landed in Phoenix, we flew right over the waterway that looks like a large river and the thought crossed my mind: well, we could ditch there if the landing goes bad. And I wondered how easily my seat cushion would rip out and if I remembered how to blow up the yellow life vest. I can hold my breath and I can swim. Then I told myself I was borrowing trouble and how silly I was being. Everything would be fine. Funny, the things that come into your mind.

I kept thinking: I'm flying home on this airline too. I get a little nervous about things like that. Anyway, as this crash landing unfolded, I was in awe of the miracles that took place. You can't tell me that God was not involved in this one! I'll bet there were 155 people all praying the same prayer plus all those in the control tower, etc. This is what the crash looked like on impact, courtesy of a virtual simulation. Of course, the water would spray all over the windows. I can't imagine what those moments of blindness must have felt like.
A calm flight crew did just what they were trained to do and got everyone out. Can you just imagine what the passengers were thinking as they stood on those wings in the middle of 40* water and 18* air? How happy to be alive!

All the ferries came immediately to the rescue. What a blessing they were there!

Here is the poor 'bird' being tugged to the docks. I love seeing how everyone worked together so efficiently and quickly.
Captain C. Sullenberger. He goes by Sully. Good job to you and your co-pilot, J. Skiles, and all the flight attendants who did your jobs so well! Miracles and bravery are still around us today.

Mom's Birthday

These are the only 2 pictures I captured with my camera, so here is the 411:

This gorgeous and delicious cake was made by my mom's friend, Maribeth. Maribeth is suffering from Valley Fever right now. My mom and dad and Lisa take care of her and her family, checking in on them, bringing meals, running her to the ER, going to doctor's visits, etc. She was determined to be a part of the party, and was 'bent' on making the cake. So she would get up off the couch and beat in the eggs. Then go lay back down. Then after a while get up and do another step. It is a homemade (from scratch! haha) coconut/pecan cake. It was incredible. The best ingredient: LOVE!

Smoke from the candles! She got them all out in one breath. Pretty good, Miss 72 years old! Clint (Kristin's hubby) is congratulating her on that.

It was a great evening.

Love you, Mom!

SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

Kristin has all the pictures so far, so I'll have to get them from her. But I came to Phoenix to surprise my mom for her birthday today.

I flew in to Arizona on Wednesday afternoon. Lisa picked me up. We had to stop at Der Weinerschnitzel for a traditional 'dog', and then we were off to Josh and Meredith's. Mother had NO idea. We didn't even tell Dad! We had the nicest visit and then Mere came home from work. Auntie left for home, and Mere put dinner on. She made a delicious Taco Salad. I learned some new things from her recipe. I'll ask her to post it on her blog. We stayed up way later than we should have, especially since she had to be at work this morning by 7am and talked and talked and talked.

Lisa came by this morning after a job interview out this way, and Mere surprised us by bringing Raja (one of the children she nannies for) with her for the afternoon while Jai was in school. We took off for Home Depot to check out the spray paint.

Kristin and Clint gave them their old mesh patio set--a round table and 4 chairs--when they got their new one. All it needs is a good washing and some spray paint and it will last them for many years. We found a beautiful walnut brown with a bit of texture in it. I didn't realize how inexpensive spray paint is. (Maybe that's why taggers use it...) Anyway, Mere went back to pick up Jai from school and Lisa and I got to washing and priming. It looks amazing just with the primer!

Off to Lisa's for dinner. Mere met us there and so did Kristin and Clint. The original plan was for Dad and Craig and Lisa to have dinner at 3 Margaritas, a local mexican restaurant by their neighborhood. That would be completely natural as they go there a lot. Then I would walk in with Josh and Meredith. Well, at church on Sunday, Lisa presented 'the plan' to Dad, who told her No, he already had plans for her birthday. Who knew? Haha! They were going to use some gift cards and go to the movies and see Australia, and then to the Olive Garden (which they love) for birthday dinner.

So as soon as Lisa got home from church, she called and said, "We have to scrap that and come up with a Plan B." She decided that she would have them come over for cake when they were done with dinner. It worked perfectly.

We had a great chicken alfredo dinner at Lisa's, and then were sitting at the dining room table. Lisa locked the front door on purpose so they couldn't just walk in like usual. When she went to answer the door, I switched seats with Kristin so my back was to the door. They came in. My Dad even walked over to the table right next to me and set the cake down that their friend Marybeth had made for my mom, and didn't even see me! Suddenly my mom started waving her arms and said, "What!? What!? Cindy???!!!" I got up to hug her and she was crying. They were both stunned for quite a while.

I had called her in the early afternoon from Josh and Mere's on my cell phone to wish her a Happy Birthday. I had to go in their closet because the tv was on, Lisa was there too, Rajah was cooing and talking while Mere was playing with him. She had NO clue. She asked what I was doing. I told her 'cleaning', which wasn't a total fib, because I was helping Mere with laundry! Putting Christmas decorations away, which I had done right up until I flew out. Haha!

Lisa is hosting a party Saturday night for a few of their friends. It will be a lot of fun!

So:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR MUTTI--
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!

Finally!

I got all the Christmas tree decorations put away. I finally figured out why I was so ornery about getting it done: This is the 3rd year that I have had to separate them. Every year my kids get ornaments from their grandparents and others. With 3 weddings over the last 3 Christmases, I've separated them out to give to the kids for their own trees. I had to do this for Natalie this year. So now her box is done and ready to give so she can use it next year to decorate. It just takes more time, that's all and I wasn't ready to set it aside to do. Now it's all wrapped up safely and ready to go up in the garage. I'll have Mike help me since Duff's back is finally on the mend and I don't want it to get tweaked!

Gosh, my dining room table looks beautiful!

I need to remember to get some new ornaments starting next fall. My supply is down by half, now! Someone please remind me come October, okay?

Did You Catch It?

24, that is! Well, it was worth the wait. I'm so glad Tony is 'good' after all. Duff called it at the end of the Sunday night episode. He said that Tony was undercover. Glad he was right. I'm kind of missing CTU, but I guess they had worn that one out and needed to move on to the FBI. I like agent Walker, don't like her 'boss' (maybe boyfriend), like Janis, don't like Sean Hillinger. Like the President and her husband, don't like the husband's SService agent. Wasn't he involved in the son's death? Glad to see Bill Buchanan back, but where is his wife? Is she still in the White House? Hurray for Chloe with dark hair now, but where is Morris, and didn't she have a baby? Where is the baby? What ever happened to Audrey? Did she ever recover?

On the Sunday night episode, we were watching the scene in the Oval office of the new president, and Duff, Christine, and I all sat up straight and pointed to the tv at the same time! Did you catch it!? The president's furniture is the same fabric that is in our living room on the chair and a-half and throw pillows, and on the dining room chairs!!! Well, well, well, thank you Jasmine for suggesting it to me. How flattering that we have white house worthy furniture!
I'm sure the 'madame president' picked it out herself!

My Family's Favorite Lasagne

We had this for dinner last night. It's my family's favorite recipe for lasagne. When I was first married, we had a potluck study dinner at our house and Gina brought this lasagne. Duff loved it so much I asked for the recipe. I was almost a little disappointed when she gave me the recipe--it was so easy for such a tasty dish and came verbatum from the BH&G red and white checkered cookbook from the 70's when I got married. So with only two small variations from the original, here is our recipe: Lasagne
1 pound hamburger plus 2 mild italian sausages
1 tsp. jarred chopped garlic
1 tablespoon basil leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1-pound can diced tomatoes
1 12 oz.(or 2 6 oz.) cans tomato paste
1 12 oz. tomato paste can of water
12-16 lasagne noodles
2 eggs
3 cups lowfat cottage cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons parsley flakes
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 pound mozzarella cheese, grated
Remove sausage meat from casing and brown with the hamburger. Spoon off any extra fat.
Add the next six (6) ingredients (garlic, basil, salt, tomatoes, tomato paste, water) and stir well to combine. Simmer, covered about 15 minutes. Stir often.
Cook noodles in boiling water according to package directions. Drain. I do not rinse them because that adds too much excess liquid to the overall dish.
Beat eggs, add remaining ingredients except mozzarella cheese.
Layer half the noodles in a 9X13 sprayed baking dish. (2 noodles each in 3 rows across the lengh of the pan.)
Spoon half the cottage cheese mixture equally down each of the 3 rows.
Add half the mozzarella cheese, and then half the meat sauce mixture.
REPEAT.
Bake at 375* about 30-45 minutes. OR assemble early and refrigerate and then bake for 45-60 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
Serves 8-10

New Schedule

We had our new church schedule today. 1-4pm. I kind of like this one. You still have your whole evening, but you get the whole morning to boot! It is great for sleep-in teenagers. We didn't start until 2pm today because of ward conference. The messages were very straightforward and timely. President Brennan gave a great one in RS and did Sister Bitter. She is amazing.

The complete sacredness of being a woman. I always thrill when I hear that message. I have never felt oppressed and I love being female. Duff has always been really good about giving me wings to fly and discover and develope new things for myself. Will we guard and protect and nourish the home and family? Or are we getting lax or tired? Good things to ponder and evaluate. It has often been tongue-in-cheek that the men are the theologians and the women the Christians. We need a balance. Women need to also be well schooled in the scriptures and doctrine and men more nurturing, compassionate.

Get our houses in order. The bishop used a talk from President Hinckley from 10 years ago, in 1998 citing the then current economic times and gave very specific counsel for the future and here we find ourselves at that place. We've had 10 years and where are we? Have we followed the prophet? Now more than ever before we need to have our finances and preparedness taken care of and in proper order. In the future, we will also need a deep supply of spiritual preparedness too.

(Lasagne for dinner. Mike and Adrianne brought the garlic bread. Can you believe the Cardinals won? The AZ family are pretty excited! Especially Uncle Craig who has tickets to the game next week! We had a good visit with the Koelliker's.)

Can It Be?

Where did the time go? Christine went to her first stake dance last night. Stake dances here are cool. She looked really cute. She had a good time. She and Sarah B. met in the parking lot and went in together. Rachel (Sarah's mom) and I remininsced about when they were born a month apart. Two cheesey moms watching their not so little girls going to their first dance parked in cars next to each other with the windows rolled down going over all the growing up milestones. She was happy when she got in the car for the ride home. This is my 5th child. It doesn't feel any different than the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Ah---seasons of parenting!

Smiles

"If you chance to meet a frown,
Do not let it stay.
Quickly turn it upside down,
And smile that frown away!

No one likes a frowning face,
Change it for a smile!
Make the world a better place
By smiling all the while."

When I was a little girl, I LOVED this song! My auntie Dolene taught it to me and my mom would sing it at home whenever one of us kids got 'grumpy'.

I knew I had a lot to do today. I was feeling 'grumpy'. When I got up, this song popped into my head. I thought, "...hmmm. Smile....". It worked! I got Christine to the Lacrosse fields to see Maddy's game, to the very deserted mall for one errand, home, church to do some vt stuff on the computer in the clerk's office, grocery store, clean up the house, make dinner, play Nertz, got Christine to the dance, got her home from the dance.

While in the grocery store, I saw a friend. She said, "Gosh, you're so happy about grocery shopping!" I didn't even realize I was smiling away! (We had been complaining about rising prices.)

'Thank you' to the little jingle from Primary!
( When I got home from the market, Mike and Adrianne were here! I love it when they just pop in and come over! Mike and Duff watched the games, and then we played some rousing games of Nertz! Adrianne was the winner! I brought up the 'rear'. No matter--it's such a fun card game. Adrianne made a peach cobbler after dinner and it was so good.)

Washing Machine

In 2001 my mom gave all of us girls for our birthdays this book by Linda Cobb titled: Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean. She is on many of the Arizona morning shows and home shows. A little about Linda Cobb: she was a newspaper columnist in Michigan where she owned a cleaning and disaster restoration business dealing with the aftermath of fires and floods. So her books are full of tips for cleaning just about everything. She has another book called Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean that is about other household cleaning.

But right now I am following her lead and cleaning my washing machine. I should probably do it more often, according to her, but I do do it twice a year--January and June. I am going to quote her because she says it best and you can get a feel for how the book is written:

"How difficult can it be? You add water and detergent, drop in the clothes, select the cycle and walk away. When you come back the clothes are clean. Okay...but have you ever considered how clean your washing machine is after all that hard water and all those dirty clothes?
"Your washer needs some TLC from time to time, especially if you have hard water in your area. So if the clothes seem dull and gray, maybe you don't need that new and improved detergent. Maybe all you need to do is clean the washing machine. Here's the easiest way I know. "Fill the washer with hot water. Add 1 quart of chlorine bleach (no detergent, please). Run the washer through the longest wash cycle. When the washer is still wet--this should be immediately after the bleach cycle--add 1 quart of white vinegar and run the washer through the same hot cycle again. This will clean out soap scum and mineral deposits from the spin basket and also from the hoses. If you live in an area with hard water you really need to do this every 3 months--otherwise every six months will do. You'll be amazed at the difference it will make."
Wah-lah! Pretty nice, huh? I usually run it through a warm rinse after, but that is my own addition to the cleaning process. Sometimes you might need to take a rag/sponge and get some of the harder/stubborn places (if you occasionally get a ring around the top), but do this while the washer is filled with the vinegar cycle so the bleach doesn't stain any of your clothes.
Don't forget to clean the fabric softener dispenser and the bleach dispenser. Did you know that you should clean the fabric softener dispenser every 4-6 weeks? This keeps it working well and prevents it from leaving softener stains on clothes. ("Liquid softener can leave blue spots on clothes; marks from dryer sheets can look lik small grease patches.)
TO DO:
Warm 1 cup of white vinegar in the microwave and pour it into the dispenser just like you would for the softener. "Make sure you use warm vinegar and make sure you do this when the washer is empty. Large pieces of sticky fabric softener will occasionally be flushed out during cleaning, and they could adhere to clothes. Not a pretty sight."
I'm telling you--this really does work!
It takes about an hour total. Fill and go, set your timer for when the cycle should finish, and start the next step. It'll be done before you know it.
