More Birthdays...

Indian Summer?
I made a TASK list last week. It just made me feel better to have something to cross off. It is 2 sides of a piece of paper. But I am pleased with what I'm getting done. It will certainly take a while to complete, but one thing at a time.
The days are getting shorter. I like the changes. It reminds me that there really are seasons because they are so subtle here.
Tonight is DWTStars elimination night. I wonder who will go home? Who do you think?
Swiss Steak
Cut steak into serving size pieces. Season to taste with the House Seasoning. Dredge/dust meat with flour.
In heavy pan, brown meat on both sides in oil. (Gotta LOVE the pot. It is one of my very favorites. Hurray for LeCruset.)
If you are using fresh garlic and not jarred, smack the clove with the wide blade of the knife with your fist. It will crack the peeling off and smash the garlic. Discard the paperlike peeling. Add the garlic just how it is. There is no need to chop it. ***Garlic Hint: To remove the garlic smell from your hands, rinse your knife under the tap water and rub your fingers up and down the blade. If your knife is stainless steel, it will take the smell right away!
Combine garlic, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper and 1 tomato can measure of water. Pour over steak and simmer covered over low heat until meat is tender about 2 hours. Check it every once in a while and add a little more water if needed to keep the meat partially covered.
Taste and correct the seasonings if needed. Serve over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.Monday, September 29, 2008
Thunderstorm

The Ant and the Contact Lens

Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens . 'Great', she thought. 'Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry.'
She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there.
When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. Although she was calm now that she was at the top, she was saddened because she could not clearly see across the range of mountains. She thought of the bible verse 'The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth.'
She thought, 'Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me.'
Later, when they had hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, 'Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?'
Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!
The story doesn't end there. Brenda's father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, 'Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it, and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You.'
I think it would do all of us some good to say, 'God, I don't know why You want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it's awfully heavy. But, if You want me to carry it, I will.'
God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Weekend Wrap-up
Duff had presidency meeting until late into the afternoon. So I got a chicken in the oven and a bite to eat quickly and then out the door for the remaining visiting teaching interviews at Julia's. They went well. We are going to meet tomorrow morning and each go over the information we gleaned. We have good sisters!
Christine had a youth leadership training meeting and by the time we all got home and ate dinner it was 6:45pm! The roast chicken dinner sure hit the spot! Shaun and Christine cleaned the kitchen and put all the food away, and then Chrissy got a hankering for a pizzookie. She and Duff put the 'cookie' all together and we enjoyed it nice and hot from the oven in the cast iron pan with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I wound down on the family room couch flipping between the two movies Father of The Bride !! and The Fugitive. I woke up and realized I had fallen asleep and headed up to bed to find my early to bed hubby completely engrossed in a book. The last time I looked, the light was still on at 12:40am!

RS Broadcast

Then Christine and I worked on her room together. It has needed a good going through all summer and we just never got to it. I usually like to do that after school shopping, but we didn't get it done then either. It was good, but I have to admit that I was a tad bit sad. Down came the Puppy Love poster. Oh! She has loved that for years. But alas has outgrown it. Out went the papers and books to 'play school' with. Out went the rest of the Barbie stuff. The Nancy Drew books are replaced with the Twilight series and others on the bookcase. My baby is a teen ager. Last night we went to the mall for a make-up demonstration at MAC. She got some new items and learned about blush and eyeliner. The gal was amazing. Christine totally listened to her even though I talked to her about the same things and was told I was soooo 'old'. Everything was age appropriate and she had a good time. We both left happy.
Tonight was the annual RS broadcast. I always look forward to this meeting. I find a great unity and strength meeting at the stake center with the sisters and hearing the messages from the general presidency and a member of the first presidency. Tonight did not disappoint. Adrianne and I went together. My mom, Lisa, Meredith, Janae and Gwen all went together in AZ. Natalie was by herself, but just knowing that the women in my family were all feasting together at the same moment was inspiring for me. The spirit was very strong and the music was uplifting. Singing all together gave me a shiver it was so beautiful.
Here are my notes:
Julie Beck--President:
- Increase my faith and personal righteousness
- Be patient and long -suffering
- Article of Faith 13
- Strengthen Families and Home
- Home to be a refuge from daily evils of the world. A sanctuary.
- Story of her mother leaving with her father to serve in another country for 3 years. Mom, what will I do w/o you? Mom's response: Tie yourself to Relief Society. It will be your mother. It will love you, strengthen you, teach you, be there for you.
- Serve the Lord and His children.
- W/O personal revelation we cannot succeed. With it we cannot fail! (just LOVE that one)
- Revelation is not a matter of pushing a button. It takes work. Be worthy of it, live for it, follow it, prepare for it.
- We may see ourselves as weak and simple, BUT we have a divine role in the building of the Kingdom of God. How do I see myself? Evaluate.
Silvia Allred--1st Counselor:
- The Lord has always commanded His people to build temples.
- People make great sacrifices to go to the temple. I have one sooo close, do I attend like I should?
- 128 temples in operation currently.
- Temple is a house of learning.
- When we go we clear our minds and hearts.
- Return as often as possible. How often is possible for me?
- The temple is a source of spiritual power and strength and revelation.
Barbara Thompson--2nd counselor:
- The church wasn't perfect until the organization of the RS.
- Early sisters gave relief
- Society is to relieve poor but also to learn and grow in the doctrine of the gospel. To be taught. None of us know it all. We must attend Sunday lessons.
- Step up and BE STRONG!
- Set and example
- Be anxiously engaged.
- Identify what is fine inside of us.
- Bear burdens, mourn with those that mourn, comfort those who need comfort.
- Be armed with love and compassion
- Keeping covenants = blessings! What are those covenants and what blessings do I receive by keeping them?
Dieter Uchtdorf-- 2nd counselor First Presidency:
- Began with story of his wife, Harriett and cooking. She is a fabulous cook and presents the meal in a beautiful manner. Yet she always finds some reason to apologize for the food. She either didn't use enough of one ingredient or too much of another, etc. He on the other hand can make greasy fried eggs and burnt toast very well with no apology.
- Men and women are different. Physically, mentally, emotionally.
- Women seem to focus on what we lack rather than who we are and what we do well.
- We feel deep sorrows, lonliness, heavy burdens.
- God wants us to be HAPPY! His glory is to bring about the immortality and eternal life of man/woman. He wants us to be happy like He is.
- God's happiness = the greatest happiness e.v.e.r!
- God is a creator. We are to be like Him, so we need to 'create'.
- We were 'created' to experience a fullness of joy.
- 'Creation' is not a canvas or paper. It doesn't have to be perfect. 'Creation' can be a smile, letter of appreciation.
- ***Creation is to make something that wasn't there before.***
- Women need to be 'creating' by being compassionate.
- Compassion: help the hands that hang down, lift the feeble knees
- As we lift others we rise higher ourselves
- Service is healing
- Work will cure your grief. Serve others.
- ***The number of prayers we say is important but equally is the number of prayers we answer.***
- Increase my faith by studying better, attending the temple more often and be better with my prayers.
- HAPPINESS IS OUR HERITAGE!
This was one of the best talks for women I have ever heard. I am going to print it out and keep it on my bedside table and refer to it.

Congrats Shaun

Keep up the good work. You're just that much closer to your goal!
Happy Anniversary Mike and Sue!
Last Minute Pleasures

Adrianne gets a Friday off every 4 weeks and today was the day. We got a call to come and meet them for a quick bite of breakfast at Ruby's. How fun was that! We threw some clothes onThursday, September 25, 2008
Just Stuff...
Christine came home not feeling well after school and still had a project to put the finishing touches on and a test to study for.
Worried about Prop 8 passing.
Some days are just like that.

Leftover Game Day
Christine and Taylor sporting their BYU game wear! Go Cougs!
Look who we ran into! Uncle Mike and Kelland. Had to grab the photo. Gee Kelland, would you stop growing already!
Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. President Samuelson stopped by our table to chat.
And can SOMEBODY give me the recipe for these amazing cookies/dessert!!! I can't figure them out, but BYU makes them plain too and dips half of them in chocolate. They are like a cream cheesey soft shortbread cookie with a cream cheese, whipcream, powdered sugar frosting and then sliced strawberries on top. OH! It's like having your own mini strawberry shortcake/cheesecake. Delicious. PLEASE somebody send me the recipe!Christine's Garden
Christine grew a garden for one of her YW Value Projects this summer. Here she is with what's left of it now in the fall. She grew:- Tomatoes
- Sunflowers
- Basil
- Chives
- Cilantro
- Rosemary
- Parsley
We've enjoyed them all summer. She even did the weeding without much complaining at all. Weeds are the worst! Good Job, Christine!

I Love What I Do!
So this morning began. I really didn't want to go. I don't know why. Tired I guess. A little ornery I guess. My suitcase is still not unpacked. My mind was flooded with a lot of other things. But once I got there and sat down with the first sister, prayed with her and started, I was filled with the most amazing peace, joy, gratitude, LOVE, spirit. Thoughts, dialogue, impressions, counsel came. I just thought: Oh, adversary, you bugger! You didn't want me or them to experience any of this STRENGHTENING power that comes from the Holy Ghost!
OUR THEME this year is on the power of the Holy Ghost. What it is and how to use it to bless our own lives and those for whom we have stewardship. Our CHALLENGE is that they will pray for the sisters they visit every day in personal prayer. Pray for the spirit of discernment to know how to help them, love them, and serve them.
THE SCRIPTURE: D&C 84:88 (selfishly one of my favorites) "And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up." The Lord didn't leave anything out. He will be in front of our face, our right, left, our hearts, and all around us! We will not be alone!
STORY: In early 1847, Brigham Young was ill at Winter Quarters. He had a dream in which he saw the Prophet Joseph who told him:
"Tell the people to be sure to get and keep the Spirit of the Lord. They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all the other spirits; it will whisper peace and joy to their souls; it will take malice, hatred, strife, and evil from their hearts; and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness and build up the kingdom of God. Be sure to tell the people to keep the Pirit of the Lord; and if they will, they will find themselves just as they were organized by our Father in Heaven before they came into the world."
QUOTE by Sheri Dew: (Read this slowly to absorb it) The Holy Ghost enlarges our minds, our hearts, and our understanding; helps us subdue weaknesses and resisist temptation; inspires humility and repentance, guides and protects us in miraculous ways; and gifts us with wisdom , divine encouragement, peace of mind, a desire to change, and the ability to differentiate between the philosophies of men and revealed truth. The Holy Ghost is the minister and messenger of the Father and the Son, and He testifies of both their glorious, global reality and Their connection to us personally. Without the presence of the Spirit, it is impossible to comprehend our personal mission or to have the reassurance that our course is right. No mortal comfort can duplicate that of THE Comforter. Said President Hinckley, "There is no greater blessing that can come into our lives than...the companionship of the Holy Spirit. And yet Brigham Young lamented: "We may have the Spirit of the Lord to...direct us....I am satisfied, however, that in this respect, we live far beneath our privileges"
Is it possible that in this twilight season of the dispensation of the fullness of times, when Satan and his minions roam the earth inspiring deceit, discouragement, and despair, that we who have been armed with the most potent antidote on earth --the gift of the Holy Ghost--don't always fully partake of that gift? Are we guilty of spiritually just "getting by" and not accessing the power and protection within our reach? Are we satisfied with far less than the Lord is willing to give us, essentially opting to go it alone here rather than partner with the Divine?
I feel so renewed! I'm still tired, but the happiness outways all the rest of it.

Promised Pictures for Jamie
Bunk room bathroom off the family room. It only had one sink before and we ripped it out (water damage is the pits) and put in two sinks instead. Click and look at the lights, they are so fun!
Family room. To the left are 3 doors: 1--to go down to the next basement where the game room is, 2--closet, 3--bunk room bathroom. Bunk room to the right.
This is a tv cabinet, etc. So fun. Click to see a more detailed look. Since we had to redo so much, we decided to go with kind of a mountain/farmhouse decor. I had the food channel on while I was cleaning down here! Hi to Sandra Lee!
Just another view of the family room taken from the french doors that go into the bunk room to the right.
Mike and Adrianne's bathroom. There is the toilet and shower to the left. Remember--ALL of these areas were flooded and many rooms down to the studs. The first time I saw it after the flood, I got physically ill. I had no idea water could do that much damage. They have a moose/pinecone theme in their's.
The long awaited craft/sewing hutch! It was just delivered and installed a couple of days before our last trip. So for right now it is empty. But has lots of room for paper, embellishments, fabric, etc. A deck to the left and a kitchen to the right and the hallway to Mike, Josh, and Shaun's rooms to the right and straight.
A big table will go in front of this to work on things. Some of the hardware still is being shipped.
The bulletin board was on this wall randomly. It is the hallway as soon as you come down the stairs (on the right) from the great room above. So we got a console to put underneath it. We post pictures, schedules, etc. on the board. Right now there is a big BYU football poster on it too.
Natalie is an avid counted cross-stitcher. She did this fishing picture that hangs in the bunk room bathroom. Click on it to see the details. She is VERY good at her hobby!
Mike and Adrianne's bedroom. Note the lantern lamp. It is really a fun touch. The original owner, a Mr. Larson, built all the beds. Working with wood is a hobby of his. Fortunately, none of them were ruined in the water.
Bunk room/family room bathroom floor. River pebbles. Such a unique look. Adds a lot of texture.
Family room kitchen. We were so lucky that for some reason none of the cabinets were ruined--the walls all around, but not the cabinets. They were a whitewashed pine, and we had them painted an antique green on the bottom and a mushroom color on the uppers. All the appliances were fine too, but we did add the farmhouse sink and beadboard tile backsplash.
Click on this to see the detail in the handles and knobs. Farmhouse stars! How do you like the bubbled glass?
Just another detail view. Love the framed quote!
The game room basement didn't have a bathroom, so we are adding one. This is the barn door entrance to it. The door actually slides left to right on the track above.
Game room, another view. The center is the door from the hallway that goes into the north garage and from the stairs from the family room above. To the right was a huge closet that we had walled off and a little kitchenette put in. To the left is a cabinet that will house the small refrigerator, microwave, etc. To the left will be a bistro table and bar stools. In foreground couch, large stuffed chair, bean bags, rugs, tv cabinet, etc.
View of the tv part of the game room from the game room. Bathroom on right, etc. It's such a mess still.
Game room portion. Note the colors: navy, white, gold. Ring any bells? The floor is a floating cork floor. The poot table is just sitting there, but the foosball, shuffleboard, ping-pong, and air hockey are in the garage for right now. The foosball was completely ruined and the air hockey. The others were fine. We were lucky on that!
A very blurry picture of the bunk room. Mr. Larson built all these bunk beds too. They are beautiful and solid as a rock!
Shaun's room and a peek of his bathroom which is where the pipe broke. This bathroom and bedroom were completely down to the studs. Just sickening.
Shaun's new bathroom. He has the bear motif going on. Check out the tiles along the counter. The black bears and the twig lining.
Linen cupboard for the new bath in the game room. I love how the finish turned out!
Cabinets for the new bath in the game room. The counter top is colored concrete. The sink is one big large trough with two spigots coming out of each side at the base of the mirror. Very 'manly'.
Josh and Meredith's bathroom. They have a pinecone motif in theirs. Click to see the details. The mirror is some kind of iron thing.
Another view of Josh and Mere's bathroom. Remember, all this was down to the nothings! We did save the tubs and shower enclosures and toilets. Whew!
Josh and Meredith's bedroom. Another one of the gorgeous beds.
Josh and Mere's room. We did replace all the comforters. I got them at the Village Quilt shoppe at Gardner Village.
A different view of Shaun's room. It has this really quaint built in cupboard with drawers. So I had them painted a darker color to stand out instead of blending in with the wall.Saturday, September 20, 2008
<---Extremes--->
Who do we happen to see in the tent? Uncle Mike Muaina and Kelland. They got some tickets from a friend in their ward. So we had a GREAT time visiting with them. Their tickets were pretty close to ours so that was fun. The Cougars didn't disappoint again! 44-0. They shut-out Wyoming this week. It was not nearly so hot as the first game, and it actually rained just a bit and we had a nice breeze and a lot of cloud cover for a little bit.
You gotta love Cosmo! By the way--he is in the running for best College Mascot. We need to vote online somewhere, I forgot where. Lots of trust in the fans to be going up into the stands! We left as quick as we could at the end. And yes, Duff's parking spot was a gem in getting out of there in a timely manner. We headed up the mountain as fast we was allowable, stopped at Smith's and everyone had something to get in their cart and we met up to check out. Dang quick shopping for Sunday I'd say! Then home to change clothes, freshen our hat hair and melted make-up and headed for Salt Lake and the Conference Center.
Wayne V.T., who I went to high school with, and he joined the church during that time, is in the Choir and emailed me to let me know that they were giving a concert and he could get us some tickets if we would like! Would we like!!!??? YES! I haven't seen Wayne in 33 years or so. So we arranged to meet after the concert.
This is the 1--guest conductor, who was amazing, the female soloist, who was very good, and the male soloist who was unbelieveable. We could have listened to him over and over again. Anyway, the concert was fabulous. I have never heard the Tabernacle Choir in person, and I have never been in the Conference Center, so this was such a treat for me. And of course to be on a date with my hubby! At one point in the concert, they were all joined together in giving a tribute to the armed forces, and at certain points in the song had each branch of the service stand. It just gave you goose bumps. I started getting emotional and kept trying to talk myself out of it, and then looked around and realized that quite a few others were getting a bit teary too. Then I didn't care anymore.
Well we met up with Wayne at the Tabernacle, and it was great to reunite. He got to meet Duff, but I didn't get to meet Joyce, his wife, so maybe next time. It is such a good emotion to meet up with a friend after all these years and see them happy, successful in life, and strong in their faith. THANK YOU SO MUCH, WAYNE. We appreciate your generosity and kindness.
